What Lives in a Marsh?

Look carefully at the marsh and discover the many living plants and animals that call the marsh their home. You might see a painted or spotted turtle basking on a log, a muskrat winding its way through the cattails or even the non-poisonous northern water snake slithering into the water. Birds that frequent the marsh include a variety of ducks, especially in the spring and fall, great blue heron, kingfisher, great egret, red-winged blackbirds and even an occasional bald eagle. Among the aquatic plants seen in the marsh, there is a spatterdock (yellow pond lily) on the surface, arrowhead with its white flowers and pickerelweed, a plant with violet-blue flower spikes extending above the water.
