Trail Marker 5

This young woodland is growing on dredge spoils placed here in 1957. Plant succession is occurring as young trees such as red maple and sassafras crowd out shrubs and groundcover. If left undisturbed, this woodland will give way to a mixed-oak forest community. Think about where you live and areas where a small woodlot may be succeeding into a mature forest.
