As you stand by this majestic tulip polar tree (about 250 years old) and look out over the Delaware River towards Philadelphia, imagine the market boats being loaded with farm products and being sailed to Philadelphia markets. You are standing on what the Indians called "The Island" - land that is elevated just enough to be above water. However, this farm is in the floodplain and the area still floods occasionally during high water periods when the river overflows its banks. On an average day, the river's high tide is five feet higher than low tide.
